Donors Matter!

Thank you so much for your support of our production of The Crucible! The numbers are in, and we managed to raise $7,020 in support of The Crucible, including donations received from audience members after the show. This is more money than Southbank has ever raised in a one-time fundraising event. Below, we’re sharing our complete budget for The Crucible to show what a major difference these donations made!

The Crucible Budget

As you can see, we made $813.30 total! Without our donors, that would not have been possible!

Profit Follows Major Losses

In the previous two shows, Red Velvet and Equivocation, the numbers were very different. Red Velvet cost $10,051.94 with a payout of only $1,360.11 — a loss of $8,691.83. Equivocation cost $12,048.15 with a payout of only $1,700.52 — a loss of 10,347.63. These were existential losses for Southbank. It meant that The Crucible needed to pay for itself, or we would likely have to cancel a production in the spring. Thanks to you, our donors, we made it.

The Importance of Grants and Donations

Without grant money and donations, Southbank cannot survive. Costs have exploded since our founding in 2021. Our first production, Seneca and the Soul of Nero, had a budget of $2,670. Now, we routinely spend more than four times that amount on a single show.

Our detailed budgets for our spring shows, Machinal and Hell’s Belle, will be included in the programs at each of the shows, but spoiler alert: they will cost $9,950 and $10,100 respectively.

Expenses Begin for Season 6

Already, we have expenses for Season 6 — paying for the licensing rights and scripts for our shows, which cost a total of $5,925.59. We’ll only be producing 3 shows in Season 6 because of our soaring expenses.

Season 6 announcement: Origin Stories

Our theme for Season 6 is “Origin Stories” — we’ll explore three plays that have very different origin stories.

September 17-27, 2026: Fun Home ($3,260.34) – a Tony Award-winning musical based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir about her coming-out journey and her complex relationship with her closeted, gay father, who runs a funeral home. (Directed by Marcia Eppich-Harris)

November 5-15, 2026: Describe the Night by Rajiv Joseph ($1,020.45) – a 90-year epic exploring the intersection of truth, lies, and the origin story of the current political power in Russia. (Directed by Paige Scott)

March 11-21, 2027: Good by CP Taylor ($1,644.80) – a play set in Germany during the rise of Nazism, exploring how a liberal, “good” man can be seduced into participating in the Holocaust. (Director TBA)
