In May, Southbank presents a collection of plays one reviewer called “a tremendous evening of little theater” by a playwright whose talent is being celebrated all over the world and certainly here in Indianapolis. Tickets are on sale now for “Didn’t See That Coming (An Evening of Plays About Fortune and Fate)” by Mark Harvey Levine at Fonseca Theatre on Indianapolis near westside May 4-14.
“Didn’t See That Coming” is eight short stories featuring ordinary people in not-so-ordinary situations. There’s death and kissing, superheroes and psychics, and a lot of surprises.
Under the direction of Anthony Nathan, the show highlights the prolific career of playwright Mark Harvey Levine. With over 2,000 productions to his name, Levine’s work has been performed everywhere from Bangalore to Bucharest and Lima to London.

The lineup includes the following short plays: “‘Scripted,” “The Rental,” “Defiant Man,” “The Folks,” “Plato’s Cave,” “The Kiss,” “Surprise,” and “The Interview.” “The pieces are as consistently dissimilar as they are consistently entertaining, which makes the evening that much more of a wonder, incorporating everything from straight-on madcap to aw-shucks sweetness,” wrote reviewer Michael C. Moore of the Kitsap Sun. “I’m betting you’ll take at least a little something — on top of the laughter — from all of them.”
About Mark Harvey Levine
A contributor to the Indianapolis theater scene for many years, Levine’s plays have been staged at Phoenix Theatre, Fonseca Theatre, IndyFringe, the Indiana Ten Minute Play Festival, and Westfield Playhouse. His work has won more than 45 awards and been produced in more than ten languages. Levine was born in Pittsburgh and is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University’s School of Drama. He lives in Pasadena with his wife, Sara, and their young son.
