I’m a bit of a collector. On my desk, I have a special place for trinkets that mean something to me: a Lego Shakespeare, a Globe Theatre box, a tiny replica of the Roman Colosseum, a single die, and a Ted Lasso tin. Each of these objects were gifts, and I keep them in front of me for inspiration. I’m inspired by Shakespeare, history, taking chances, and believing in something bigger than myself — win or lose. (If you haven’t seen the TV show Ted Lasso, that’s the message: believe in something bigger, win or lose.)
At Southbank, it’s important to make theatre that makes a difference. In our first six shows, we’ve done just that, tackling politics, family, identity, racism, sex work, toxic work environments, abortion, domestic violence, and gun violence. Since 2021, we’ve worked with almost 100 theatre artists and musicians, and paid them over $18,000 in stipends. We’ve collaborated with IndyFringe, Storefront Theatre, and Fonseca Theatre, and we’re excited to produce our first original musical adaptation, Troilus and Cressida, in the Shelton Auditorium at Butler University next summer.
All of this incredible work takes money — so far $44,301.78 — and because we want to keep our shows affordable, our ticket sales have only covered 55% of our costs.
